If you just turn on the tape recorder at the start of the interview, you are going to get some very initial impressions that are vague and indefinite. It’s the same with written statements. If you just hand the witness a black sheet of paper and tell him to write it, or you just start writing yourself, it will be the same, with “I think so” or “maybe” or “I guess so” In other words it would give the defense a lot to question and argue about.

I agree with your argument. I only question how many recordings would get “lost” when they where not so favorable to the State.
